Kunwarrde Bimdi Munguyhmunguyh – Rock Paintings Have Always Been There: Shaun Namarnyilk
5 November 2021 – 7 jan 2022
Curated by Injalak Arts, an Aboriginal owned institution of 30 years, Kunwarrde Bimdi Munguyhmunguyh – Rock Paintings Have Always Been There collates a trio of canvases by Shaun Namarnyilk.
Pulled from hidden rock art sites of the West Arnhem plateau only accessible via helicopter, Shaun Namarnyilk is inspired by rock art not witnessed for thousands of years. These works emulate kunwarddebim (kunwinjku word for paintings) and the surfaces they cling to – present since the beginning of aboriginal history. Tutored by old man Bardayal "Lofty" Nadjamerrek who received an A.O. for his cultural teachings, Shaun upholds his Grandfather’s legacy through his paintings, developing them into a contemporary context that criss-crosses Australia’s northern tip to Ground Floor Gallery in Melbourne’s inner north.
