fonua (land)
TE KAHUWHERO ALEXANDER-TU'INUKUAFE

Brunswick Street Gallery is pleased to announce the First Prize winner as Te Kahuwhero Alexander-Tu’Inukuafe for their artwork 'Fonua (Land)'

Of this work, esteemed judge Robyn Gawenda said in a statement:

‘As I move through the galleries, I am overwhelmed by the volume of work, struck by the contrasts and complementarity of colours, textures, subject matter. With clipboard in hand, I scribble notes furiously. Within moments, my page is a confused mess of numbers, arrows and remarks composed in an indecipherable new language.

In a quiet gallery corner, my eyes rest and eventually transfix on ‘Fonua (Land)’ by Te Kahuwhero Alexander-Tu’Inukuafe.

The dynamic, intricate lines create waves of movement, as if the work is a piece of coarse fabric. On closer inspection, the mastery of hand-drawn lines create a hypnotic visual effect. The command of the medium is clear, and the framing defines a universe of experience, distinct from its neighbouring works.

Within moments of engaging with ‘Fonua (Land)’, the gallery walls fall away. As I contemplate the title, I feel grounded, and become conscious of the land I stand on. The work evokes memories of places; how falling light envelopes a landscape at dusk. How soft waves lap against a riverbank.

Its quietness and detail offers an invitation to another space to contemplate, reflect and connect with place. In this complex time, a moment of reflection is a special and important gift.

I congratulate Te Kahuwhero, and thank all of the exhibiting artists for generously sharing their creativity to the community.’

– Robyn Gawenda

Congratulations to Te Kahuwhero Alexander-Tu’Inukuafe, awarded the First Prize, as selected by Robyn Gawenda, Executive Director and Co-CEO of Footscray Community Arts Centre.

The First Prize winner will receive a $3000 Cash Prize (non-acquisitive), proudly supported by Community Bank Clifton Hill-North Fitzroy.

lullaby
ayman kaake

Brunswick Street Gallery is pleased to present the Brunswick Street Gallery Prize to Ayman Kaake for their video installation ‘Lullaby'.

Of this piece, Brunswick Street Gallery’s Director Sean Smith, Gallery Manager Jacqui Burnes and Gallery Coordinator Woody Mellor issued a joint statement:

‘Chosen for its all encompassing conceptual significance, Ayman Kaake’s moving image work, ‘Lullaby’, is both a thoughtful and culturally relevant self-portrait of the young Lebanese photographer. With themes that are at once deeply personal and public, Ayman allows us a view through his own struggle in the face of devastating events in our recent global history—the terrifying explosion in Beirut, August 2020. As the dual recipient of the Brunswick Street Gallery Prize, our judging panel were unanimous in awarding Ayman the opportunity to further develop his practice with a solo exhibition in our 2022/2023 exhibition program.’

Congratulations to Ayman Kaake, awarded a Brunswick Street Gallery Prize as selected by the Brunswick Street Gallery’s Director Sean Smith, Gallery Manager Jacqui Burnes and Gallery Coordinator Woody Mellor.

The Brunswick Street Gallery Prize winner will be awarded a $1500 contribution towards a solo exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery in 2022/23.

Brunswick Street Gallery Prize

beatrice dahllof

Brunswick Street Gallery is pleased to present the Brunswick Street Gallery Prize to Beatrice Dahllof for their painting ‘Untitled'.

Of this piece, Brunswick Street Gallery’s Director Sean Smith, Gallery Manager Jacqui Burnes and Gallery Coordinator Woody Mellor issued a joint statement:

‘Beatrice Dahllof’s enigmatic and gestural oil painting immediately caught the eye of our gallery team as each artwork was being unpacked for installation. The small and elegant composition presents a combination of figurative and decorative elements in a way that feels intuitive, hinting at a process that is as equally reactive as it is planned. Her consideration of colour and application of paint is confident, playful and indicative of a young painter with a promising career ahead of her. We are excited to offer Beatrice an opportunity to exhibit with us in the upcoming 2022/2023 Exhibition program, as a dual recipient of the Brunswick Street Gallery Prize.’

Congratulations to Beatrice Dahllof, awarded a Brunswick Street Gallery Prize as selected by the Brunswick Street Gallery’s Director Sean Smith, Gallery Manager Jacqui Burnes and Gallery Coordinator Woody Mellor.

The Brunswick Street Gallery Prize winner will be awarded a $1500 contribution towards a solo exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery in 2022/23.

‘Craft Victoria is delighted to award Anne U as recipient of the Object Prize as part of Brunswick Street Gallery’s 2022 Small Works Art Prize.

We were immediately taken by Anne’s work Balance/Chaos and after additional research into the artist’s practice its story of how it came to be. After a disaster beginning - an unfortunate casualty at the banding wheel - Anne gathered the broken shards to reform the pieces into its current sculptural form. The work is a story of persistence, something that is pertinent to us all in this post-pandemic world.

Additionally, the glaze is really beautiful!’
