‘This kinetic sculpture using a rotary telephone (an object younger generations may never even have seen in real life) dials an unknown number in a continuous loop. It hints at a hidden story and a larger conceptual idea: Whose phone is this? Who's making the call? Who are they calling? Why is no one answering? It seemed to nod towards horror films where objects take on a (terrifying) life of their own, as well as humour, frustration, playing with muscle memory (getting your digits stuck in the holes to dial each number) and even a sense of respect for no longer useful twentieth century technology that has been discarded from contemporary life. I thought this was an intriguing glimpse into Hearnes' world, and the opportunity to see her create a larger installation was irresistible.’

CLIFROY PRIZE – SOLO EXHIBITION AT BRUNSWICK STREET GALLERY
sanctuary BY kate symons
‘I found this work very moving. It spoke of time and movement, these found elements of nature - the worn-smooth, bleached driftwood in conversation with the hairy, finely detailed texture of the dried seedpod*. Hanging vertically, the curved pod shape has an intimacy, like a shelter or a bower, the Sanctuary of its title. If you get up close, there is a fragrant, spicy bush scent, also a powerful trigger for memory, and astonishing in its own way, nature's urge to life and longevity. You have a sense of the artist carefully observing her surrounds, travelling her own well worn paths on walks, responding to the shape and feel of detritus she encounters, selecting and collecting. There is a sense of duration in the inherent weathering of these nature elements, and their journey from seed to a life in the sun and rain, and then falling to the earth and being given a new meaningful context. We pause to reflect on nature's place as a protector and giver of life, something none of us should take for granted. This small work also hinted at the enveloping work Symons might make on a larger scale. I'd love to hear what else she has to say.’
