threshold of dreams: isabella andrews
12 – 29 May 2022

Isabella's works explore dreamscapes, seeking to create a space for them in our waking world through the hidden psychological messages that are contained in our dreams. They also explore how the experience of time and space might be altered by the subconscious. How can the experience of liminality be represented? Can certain images act as a threshold between the worlds of dreaming and waking?

Impressionism and Neo Noir Photography inspire her work, as they both push the boundaries of how atmosphere and moments in time can be captured. In trying to achieve this, she uses the human form as a vessel to carry the viewer through the progressively more atmospheric narrative in each painting, acting as a sort of grounding point between reality and a dream.

Water is a constant source of inspiration and at the center of her practice. Water and dreams parallel each other in many ways. The fluid and intangible nature of dreams leaves us with many unexplained questions. Water contains complex and unexplored ecosystems that mirror the complexity of the subconscious, a web of mysteries waiting to be unraveled. These paintings emerge from snippets of memories, dreams and fantasies that float atmospherically in the medium of water, a metaphor for both the unconscious and the sublime
