To be True: Emma Labattaglia
15 – 31 july 2022
The many thoughts, questions and feelings explored by the artist from a subjective standpoint. Emma explores expressing her layers of emotion through oil stick, oil paint, oil pastels and dry pastel on linen and canvas. Playing with colour, texture and form to express how she thinks and feels on her journey. Emma tries to zone out and listen to music which helps her work intuitively.
Emma is an abstract artist having completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Painting Degree in 2003. She has since then had an extensive career, focusing on illustration whilst being a mother. Emma’s children, having now grown, is embracing her artwork in her studio which is nestled in the coastal town of St Andrews beach.
Emma explores the idea of organic versus synthetic in this current world. Her works are a subjective expression of her thoughts and feelings in a considered yet naive way of presenting them. She explores this ideal through the contrasting of playful shapes and colours, whilst using different mediums. In amongst the abstract works she uses the occasional drawing or resemblance of what could be. Emma uses many layers and a lot of the time her work is about what was.
Emma's work has a nostalgic childlike feeling to it, as well as a very feminine presence. Emma works to music which she tries to zone out to whilst creating. She finds this helps her reach her subconscious internal dialogue, making it easier for her not overthink the process of expression.
